- FEMA Search Dog
"Harlow"
Worcester Cold Storage
- Warehouse Fire
December 4 - 12, 1999
Throughout an operational
period beginning Saturday, December 4, 1999 through Sunday, December
12, 1999, two search canines from FEMA MA TF 1 along with search
canines from the Massachusetts and Connecticut State Police
responded to the Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse where six
firefighters lost their lives in a catastrophic warehouse fire. Each
of these canines was rotated into the building as excavation efforts
cleared the building of burned material. All of the canines
performed well and areas of interest correlated with the locations
where the missing firefighters were ultimately found.
At the time of this response, "Harlow," a 7-year old Doberman
Pinscher, had been in urban search and rescue training (i.e.
confined space and collapsed structures) for over five years and had
been trained in human remains detection for two years.
